Preface
According to Le Corbusier's famous phrase, architecture is
"the knowing, magnificent and ordering play of volumes gathered
under the light".
Artware Edition Architektur intends to make these volumes
more accessible by facilitating insights into the process
of their creation. That which will become a space, a form
in space, a structure, is as yet only a series of pictures
- a series of details from defining positions of architectural
thinking which identify a present moment in relation to potential
future opportunities. Due to the fact that they are available
in the form of drawings, it is possible to consider these
questions more extensively. Considerations leading to building,
to the art of architecture, become apparent as first sketches
of ideas, as approaches to a program, as abstractions, as
provisional concepts, as specified details.
In a world determined by film and photography, the drawing
offers its own opportunities - chances for spontaneity, careful
attention or temporary indecision. Much is still open, nothing
finally fixed. The project is evolving. One part may represent
many other parts, or the germ-cell of a whole.
First tentative ideas, still evasive, are put on paper. Intermediate
stages illustrate the methodical complexity, the steps taken
from initial concept to final plan. Dimensions, penetrations,
surfaces, materials are assigned their various functions.
Precision is expressed as an all encompassing approach to
formal qualities or as a faithful-to-detail assemblage. The
pencil, felt-pen or nib designs finally change into computer
printouts, being translated into 'pre-conceived' mathematics
in the process. Originally not intended for public display,
they offer insights into the inner world and workings of a
design process. lf and when public interest is attracted to
such design processes, architecture can enter into a wider
awareness as a claim to quality. Living with carefully edited
graphic renderings of architecture should contribute to people
feeling such intense sensibilities. At the same time, the
drawings are illustrations of how to deal with highly complex
design problems, something rarely perceived outside the architectural
profession. The mental steps from conception to implementation
- entailing the coordination of various demands, techniques
and specialities - assume exemplary character in the drawings
documenting the process.
The architects who were invited to contribute to Artware
Edition Architektur, are also exemplary for their visionary
philosophy. The respect they have for each other was an essential
criterion for the selection of the contributors .
The drawings and production methods for the artworks were
selected jointly, based on the consensus that this edition
is to be conceived as a stimulus for its viewers' discerning
consideration of architecture - and of practical construction.
